TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language

best TOEFL preparation for Frankfurt

The TOEFL is an admission requirement for many international academic programs abroad and in Germany but is also needed for semesters abroad or as proof of a certain level of English.

One can take the TOEFL in several cities in Germany – Aachen, Augsburg, Berlin, Bonn, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Freiburg, Hamburg, Hannover, Koblenz, Mannheim, München, Osnabrück, St. Blasien, Sankt Augustin, Rostock, Schönebeck, Stuttgart und Tübingen  – on specific dates. It has been planned to increase the number of test centres. You can find an up-to-date list of test centres on www.toefl.org.

There are two versions of the TOEFL test: the internet-based TOEFL test (TOEFL iBT) as well as TOEFL Institutional Testing Program (TOEFL ITP). This paper-based test is offered 6 times a year in regions which do not offer the TOEFL-iBT, for example in the Gaza Strip, Madagascar or Malawi.

TOEFL® Grading scale

The TOEFL iBT test is more difficult than previous versions (TOEFL Computer-Based Test with a maximum of 300 points and the TOEFL Paper-Based Test with a maximum of 677 points). The TOEFL iBT Test is no longer adaptive. The move to the iBT format took place in October 2005.

Most undergraduate degrees require TOEFL iBT scores of between 79 to 100, graduate and post graduate programs (Master Degree, MBA, PhD, LLM), on the other hand, generally require at least 100 points. Some degrees require a minimum score in each of the 4 sections (e.g. 22 points per section = minimum of 88 points), others might require a minimum overall score and a minimum score in one of the sections (generally this is in writing).

Due to the high demand and the lack of test capacity, test dates are very quickly fully booked. We would therefore recommend that you register for your selected test date at least 8 -10 weeks in advance.

TOEFL and TOEFL IBT are registered trademarks of Educational Testing Service (ETS) in the United States and other countries.
