State-certified translator

At ELOQUIA the part-time preparation to become a state certified translator takes an average of one year after one has successfully passed the recognised translator exam and can be started at any time. Should you however decide to not pass the recognised translator exam first , then you will have to plan with an average preparation time of three years. The state-certified examination must be taken at the Office for Teacher Education in the V department of the Hessian Ministry of Culture, by whom it is also organised.

Since the profession of translator or interpreter is not regulated, the state examination, in addition to diplomas acquired at universities or colleges in Germany, should be regarded as the professional entrance certificate for this profession and is therefore the best basis for an oath before the regional courts as a sworn translator and an independent translation activity. It is not only the courts which certify and authorize state-certified translators or interpreters, but this qualification is also considered to be a seal of quality by clients of the private sector. The test is therefore very demanding. Currently the examination fee for the state examination for translators is € 385.00. The examination is based on the regulation from July 21st 2010.
