Italian is spoken by about 66 million people mainly on mainland Italy, the south of Switzerland, Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica. As a singular language with numerous dialects, Italian, which originates directly from Latin as do the other Romanic languages, was spoken by the Romans and by those ethnic groups under their reign. Amongst the Romanic languages Italian is closest to Latin.
