The TOEFL iBT® is fully digital and taken on computer. The test is adaptive – difficulty and number of items adjust to your level.

TOEFL iBT® – Scoring & score overview

As of 21 January 2026, the TOEFL iBT® uses a new 1–6 scale (in half-band increments). Each section is scored individually on this scale. The Overall Score is the average of the four sections. During a two-year transition period, a comparable score on the previous 0–120 scale is also provided.

Important: As of 21 January 2026, the TOEFL iBT® is scored on the new 1–6 scale. During a two-year transition period, test takers also receive a comparable overall score on the previous 0–120 scale. Results are usually available within 3 days online.

Most universities are currently updating their score requirements for the new scale. Please check the current requirements of your target institution.

Important notes

  • ID: A valid passport or national ID card is required on test day.
  • Registration: Exclusively via www.toefl.org – direct booking through Eloquia is not possible.
  • Early registration recommended: 8–10 weeks before your preferred test date, as demand is high.
  • Punctuality: Late entry is not possible.
  • Home Edition: The TOEFL iBT® is also available as a Home Edition (on your own computer with a live proctor). More info at www.toefl.org.
  • Rescheduling/cancellation: ETS policies apply; observe deadlines and fees.

How do I register for the TOEFL iBT®?
Registration is exclusively via the official ETS website www.toefl.org. Search for the test centre “Eloquia” under “Frankfurt am Main”.
What has changed about the scoring?
As of 21 January 2026, the TOEFL iBT® uses a new 1–6 scale (in half-band increments) instead of the previous 0–120 scale. During a two-year transition period, you will also receive a comparable score on the old scale.
How quickly will I get my results?
Official results are usually available within 3 days in your ETS account. PDF score reports can be downloaded one day after that.
How long are my TOEFL results valid?
TOEFL iBT® results are valid for 2 years from the test date. Please check the specific requirements of your target institution.
What are MyBest® Scores?
MyBest® Scores (also known as “superscores”) combine your best section results from all valid TOEFL tests taken in the last 2 years. Many universities accept MyBest® Scores – check the requirements of your target institution. If your score report is on the new 1–6 scale, older results (0–120) are automatically converted to the new scale.
Can I send my scores to universities?
Yes. Your test fee includes up to 4 free official score reports, which you can send to institutions via your ETS account until 10 p.m. on test day. Additional reports cost US $25 per institution.
Do I need preparation courses?
Recommended, as the TOEFL iBT® is a demanding exam. ELOQUIA offers targeted TOEFL preparation courses as well as private tuition.
