IELTS Academic vs. General Training – What’s the difference?

Both test versions assess Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The difference lies in the focus of Reading and Writing:

Test structure & duration

We offer the computer-based version of IELTS (Academic and General Training). Both versions consist of four parts:

Listening Listening comprehension: everyday conversations, monologues, academic lectures approx. 30 min
Reading Reading comprehension: Academic = academic texts; General = everyday texts approx. 60 min
Writing Academic = chart/graph + essay; General = letter + essay approx. 60 min
Speaking One-to-one interview with a certified examiner (interview, long turn, discussion) approx. 11–14 min

Total duration ≈ approx. 2 h 45 min. The written parts (Listening, Reading, Writing) are completed on computer in a group room.

Test day schedule

On test days we typically offer two sessions:

Morning session (AM)

  • Written parts in the morning
  • Speaking test in the afternoon

Afternoon session (PM)

  • Written parts in the afternoon
  • Speaking test in the morning

The Speaking test is a one-to-one interview with a certified examiner.

Note: You select the exact time of your Speaking test directly during the booking process.

Important notes

  • ID: A valid passport is required on test day (national ID cards are not accepted for IELTS).
  • Punctuality: Late entry is not possible.
  • Accommodations: Please contact us well in advance of registration.
  • Rescheduling/cancellation: IELTS and ELOQUIA policies apply; observe deadlines/fees.

IELTS – Scoring & Band Scores

IELTS scores each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) individually on a scale from 1.0 to 9.0. The Overall Band Score is the average of the four individual scores (rounded to the nearest half band). The scoring scale applies equally to Academic and General Training.

Most universities require an Overall Band Score of 6.0–7.0 (Academic); visa and immigration requirements (General Training) vary by country.

FAQ

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?
Academic is designed for university study and academic admission; General Training is for work, immigration and professional development. Listening and Speaking are identical; Reading and Writing differ in focus. Both versions are available at our test centre.
Is the computer-based IELTS equivalent to the paper-based version?
Yes, content and scoring are identical. The only difference is the delivery format (computer). Computer-based results are typically available faster (3–5 days instead of 13 days).
How quickly will I get my results?
Computer-based IELTS results are usually available within 3–5 days. We will notify you by email as soon as results are released.
How long are my IELTS results valid?
IELTS results are valid for 2 years from the test date. Please check the specific requirements of your target institution.
What ID do I need on test day?
A valid passport is required for IELTS. National ID cards are not accepted.
Do I need preparation courses?
Recommended to practise the test format and strategies. ELOQUIA offers targeted IELTS preparation courses for both versions.
