[ Cambridge English Skills Test ]
The Cambridge English Skills Test measures English from A1 to C1 in Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. It is designed for internal assessment, for example before training, for class placement or as a progress test. You take it at our centre in Frankfurt or online.
A placement test, not a certificate
Cambridge describes the Skills Test as being for internal use only, without external recognition. You receive a Results Report, but no recognised certificate. If you need proof of your English for a job application, a university or an authority, choose Linguaskill, IELTS or a Cambridge exam.
General or Business
Skills Test General
Everyday English for adults aged 16 and over, for example for placement at universities or to check whether someone is ready for IELTS or Linguaskill.
Skills Test Business
English in a work context, for example to identify training needs or for placement in a company.
You choose the version when you book. The price is the same.
Four modules, separately or combined
Reading · approx. 30–40 min
Adaptive, maximum 59 minutes. Results are immediate.
Listening · approx. 30–40 min
Adaptive, maximum 59 minutes. Results are immediate.
Writing · 45 min
Marked by AI and examiners, results within 48 hours.
Speaking · 16 min
Marked by AI and examiners, results within 48 hours.
You can take the modules on different days. The Results Report shows the score for each module and overall.

Where do you take the test?
At the test centre: with us at Kaiserstraße 10 in Frankfurt, with our computer and headset.
Online: on your own computer, with automated invigilation running during the test. You need a PC or Mac with webcam, microphone and a stable internet connection. We send you your login details and technical instructions in advance.

Frequently asked questions
How is it different from Linguaskill?
Linguaskill leads to an internationally recognised certificate of results and covers B1 to C2. The Skills Test is designed for internal assessment, covers A1 to C1 and costs less.
Can I retake a module?
Yes. You can retake a module within six months, and your best score counts.
Is the test suitable for groups in a company?
Yes, that is what it is made for. Get in touch and we will agree dates and the process for your group.
Are access arrangements available, such as extra time?
Cambridge offers extra time, enlarged print, Braille and versions for candidates with hearing difficulties, among others. Please contact us before booking.
